What is NRG?

NRG is a community group and local area development provider committed on the Warwick Way estate to being active in starting and managing projects that offer opportunities in a range of skill, training and leisure activities for people (especially young people) across the Warwick Way community in a range of different personal and social areas.

With the provision of a fun, safe and challenging environment the aim is to help young people to develop holistically causing them to maximise their potential as they grow emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.

In particular, NRG aims to:

  • Initiate activities that will benefit the general well-being and sense of community on the Warwick Way estate.
  • Facilitate places of meeting for young members of the estate for them to learn and grow in maturity across the physical, emotional and spiritual areas of their life.
  • Facilitate the opportunity of progression for individuals; in lifeskills, decision making, maturity and experience.
  • Encourage and exemplify a partnership approach with agencies and organisations working onto the Warwick way Estate community in meeting social and personal need.

NRG After-school Club

Meeting from 5pm-6pm on a Tuesday evening at Knightthorpe Methodist Centre, NRG hosts a club full of lively games, sports and art and craft activities. Over 20 young people descend on the club each week to enjoy time together in a varied and enthusiastic way. Running alongside the club is a mums only area, where mums and carers can put their feet up, have a cuppa and enjoy socialising with others whilst their child enjoys the club.

The after-school club has been running for a year and has been involved in all manner of activities. From community photograph projects to residential trips away into the heart of Derbyshire the young people have enjoyed a varied and fun time. Through the receiving of a recent BBC Children in Need grant the project is only set to grow, as future trips away, estate projects and much more dodge ball promises to keep the young people active and interested.

NRG Funding Schemes

NRG is funded and resourced by a variety of different funding streams and charitable donations. We are actively seeking continued support across all levels of our work.

Funding for the NRG after-school club has come through the Local Network Fund, the Leicestershire Funding Tool Kit, and from gifts and donations from King's Church and Knightthorpe Methodist Church. Any monies received are all placed directly into the advancement of Warwick way community through the schemes and projects NRG offers.

We have just received funding from BBC Children in Need to facilitate the running of an after-school club for 5-11 year olds on Tuesday afternoons. Receiving over £30,000 over 3 years the money will enable us to supply the club with resources, equipment and apparatus as well as employ a Playworker who will co-ordinate home-visiting, homework clubs and other activities for the young people on the estate.

Core Values

NRG is a community project and is wholeheartedly committed to the principle of equality of opportunity. NRG is committed to preventing discrimination or unfair treatment against, and promote equal opportunity for, all members of staff, and those that the projects serve on the grounds of race, gender, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, responsibility for dependants, age or disability. NRG is opposed to discriminatory attitudes, and is committed to translating this into all aspects of its work. We recognise that any progress requires the participation and commitment of all staff, and those the project serves, to the policy, as well as development of procedures and structures in practice.

NRG accepts the moral and legal responsibility to implement procedures, to provide a duty of care for all children and vulnerable adults, safeguard their well being and protect them from abuse when they are engaged in services organised and provided by NRG.

NRG principles

The core values of the NRG project are:

  • The regard and consideration for young people and project workers exemplifies good practice in the provision and monitoring of equal opportunities
  • All project workers have a positive regard for young people and treat them with respect.
  • Project workers have high expectations concerning young people's potential and achievement, coupled with realism and honesty.
  • To work with and consult young people about their views and opinions in order to develop and progress opportunities provided.

The implementation of these values will result in:

  • Raising aspirations
  • Taking account of young people's views
  • Engagement in helping to stop young people drifting in life
  • Community involvement
  • Extending opportunity and equality of opportunity
  • Voluntary input

The support of volunteers and partners

NRG as a community organisation relies heavily on the support and help of various voluntary services and volunteer workers. Relationships with organisations such as Kings Church, Extreme Team and Knightthorpe Methodist are vital in the continual provision of voluntary staff to assist with the success of the work. NRG is committed to offering training and support for all volunteers and helpers in order to maximise development of all involved.

Future

NRG is continually looking to build and expand on its work into the Warwick Way community with relevant and timely projects. It is committed to being both reactive and proactive in providing social and personal development for all in the community, especially those with limited access and provision.

If you feel like you would like to get involved with any of the work that goes on through NRG, please do not hesitate in getting in contact with Andrew Hulley the project co-ordinator on 01509 234234 ext 316.
